The Boys and Girls Varsity Lacrosse Teams both showed tons of passion this year, capping off their seasons with winning records and playoff berths.
Girls Lacrosse had an elite run, finishing second in their division and 6th overall in New York City with an impressive 10-2 record. Despite a 14-6 playoff loss to Christopher Columbus Campus on May 8 at the Hive, the team only plans to come back stronger.
“Every time we play together, we learn from our mistakes,” said junior Sabina Lesman.
New coach Ms. Cynthia Vizueta has played a key role in sparking the team’s positive mindset. “It’s been exciting transitioning from JV last year,” she said. “I am still learning every day.”
Last year's team was only able to haul in three wins, while this year they’ve transformed into a force inside of PSAL that nobody can underestimate.
Captains Sam Moletter ‘27 and Daisy Robles ‘26 have helped guide the team’s success.
“The team is improving every day,” Moletter said. “It's my goal as captain to help drive players to be the best that we all can be while also creating the community that makes us so strong.”
Moletter has been unstoppable this season, scoring a mind-blowing 61 goals while also tallying 23 assists. Her goals mark was second-best in all of PSAL.
The statistical dominance did not end with Moletter, as sophomore Molly Murphy was not shy of sharing the ball, racking up a city-high 53 assists.
Even when the upset loss to Columbus left the team feeling down, their sense of community stayed strong.
“Obviously, it sucks to lose,” said Moletter, "but we’ll hopefully use the offseason to improve our championship shot next year.”
Robles said, "It's been a tough letdown with this being my last year, but the thing that I care most about is the amazing people that I was able to meet over the years."
Boys Lacrosse faced similar triumphs and disappointments, holding a 7-5 record before hitting the playoffs, where they were defeated 14-6 by Bronx High School of Science on May 7.
The rise to the playoffs seemed next to impossible after a 0-3 start to the season.
Wyatt Stephan ‘26 said, “Everyone definitely seemed really down on themselves after our first few games. It was hard to see how we were going to bounce back.”
Team captain Jonathan Beauzile ‘26 said, "After the first three losses I was still pretty confident because those were the hardest games of the year with the worst possible version of our team. All we needed to do was put in the work.”
With a long season ahead of them, the team had to find out what they were made of. The volatility of the March weather made practices brutal at times and perfect at others.
“It’s crazy, we’d run scrimmages in the snow one day, and the next it’s perfect weather,” Sharif Cargo Jr. ‘26 said. “The conditions were definitely something.”
Senior Jahssiah Philbert-Flack said, “Once we got through the weather and low spirits, it for sure made us stronger.”
Soon, the team not only found their rhythm, but themselves too. Their midfield scorers stepped up as the team exploded with a six game win streak over strong opponents, putting them right back into the mix for the playoffs. Team captain Matthew Edionwe ‘26 and Beauzile contributed 27 and 12 goals, respectively.
Edionwe said, “I'm really proud of the way the team was able to turn it up. We just needed the focus.”
Max Klopper ‘26 moved from primarily playing defense to offense this year and ended up scoring 16 regular season goals and three in the playoff loss. “I love being on the other side of the field, as scoring is always the most rewarding,” he said. “But defense really controls the game.”
Unfortunately, the end-of-season momentum wasn’t enough to carry the squad to a championship. "We tried, and sometimes it doesn’t go your way,” starting defenseman Garvey Grandchamps ‘26 said. “But the boys on the team and the effort we put in really made the experience special.”
